Spain downs Algeria in first match

Spaniard Borja Ruiz spikes from the middle

Attack and ace of Bugallo followed by block and spike by Baos gave Spain a 4-0 lead in the first set. Good defense at the net and combined offense expanded the margin to 8-2. Spike by lefthander Almansa parlayed with an ace produced by Bruque increased the lead to 11-4 forcing an Algerian time-out. The action resumed and Francisco Ruiz scored twice with a tip and attack around another ace of Bruque sending Spain to a 16-4 lead at the second pause. The rest of the set was not different except for the blocking and attack of Algerian Benkahoul and Spain won it 25-12.

Algeria took the lead 8-6 in the second set behind the two spikes apiece by Nedjar and Baadji and the same production from Spaniards Bugallo and Francisco Ruiz. A couple of Algerian mistakes produced the tie at 8 forcing a time-out. Spike of Baadji and block by Kerboua gave back the two-point lead to Algeria, but Spain equaled at 15-all with opponents errors and took the lead 16-15 with a tip by Baos. Ace by Ruiz, another Algerian mistake, and spike by Almansa increased the distance to 19-15 en route to a 25-18 final.

Solid blocking and a pair of bombs by Francisco Ruiz gave Spain the lead at 8-2. Two consecutive aces by Borja Ruiz provided an 11-3 comfortable margin and the second technical time-out found Spain ahead 16-8 thanks to a cross-court spike by Baos. Attack and block by Borja Ruiz improved the gap to 19-9 but a pair of blocks by Haichour helped to reduce the distance to 20-11. The rest of the set continued without novelties and Spain won 25-16.
