Korea power past Peru in straight sets


Hwang Youn-Joo led Korea's attack with 14 points in the victory over Peru

Tokyo, Japan, May 27, 2012 - Korea routed Peru in straight sets (25-11, 25-18, 25-21) to claim a berth in the Olympic Games on the final day of action in the FIVB Women's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gym on Sunday.

Korea finished with a 5-2 record after the victory, while Peru closed at 1-6. The Koreans held a 14-7 margin in the block category and both teams scored with three aces.

Hwang Youn-Joo led Korea with 14 points. Jung Dae-Young added 11 in the win. Kim Yeon-Koung played sparingly, finishing with nine points. Karla Oritz had 10 points for Peru.

Korea raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set. A spike by Hwang made it 7-1 for Korea. Mirtha Uribe's spike took it to 7-2. Hwang's spike put Korea up 8-2 at the first TTO. Han Song-Yi's block saw Korea go up 10-3. Karla Ortiz sent a spike long as Korea extended their lead to 14-5. Kim Yeon-Koung spiked for 15-5. Peru sent a serve long and Korea was on top 16-6 at the second TTO. Rueda served into the net to give Korea a 20-7 advantage. Han Song-Yi's spike gave Korea a 23-9 lead. A service ace by Han Song-Yi saw Korea take the set 25-11.

A spike by Han Song-Yi put Korea ahead 5-3 in the second set. Rueda sailed a spike long for 7-5 and led 8-7 at the first TTO on a spike by Hwang. Diana Soto's spike moved Peru in front 10-9. Hwang's service ace put Korea back in the lead at 14-13. Hwang's spike made it 16-14 for Korea at the second TTO. Yang Hyo-Jin's dink took the count to 20-16 for Korea and Peru called a timeout. Kim Sa-Nee's service ace made it 23-17 as Korea closed in on the set. A passing error by Peru gave Korea set point at 24-18 and Hwang finished the set 25-18 with a spike.

A block by Clarivet Yllescas put Peru up 5-4. Peru made it 7-5 with a block. Ginna Lopez spiked off a nice option play and Peru led 8-6 at the first TTO. A net infraction by Korea made it 11-7 for Peru. Han Yoo-Mi's spike pulled Korea within one at 14-13. Ortiz answered back with a spike for 15-13 and Yllescas spiked to make it 16-13 at the second TTO. Trailing 16-14, Korea brought Kim Yeon-Koung back in off the bench after she sat for the equivalent of two sets. She spiked for two of the next three points and it was 17-16 for Peru. A service ace by Rueda made it 20-17 and Korea took a timeout. Korea pulled within a point at 21-20 on a block by Jung Dae-Young. Kim Yeon-Koung soared for a spike down the middle and the score was even at 21-21. Han Song-Yi's block gave Korea a 22-21 lead and then Ortiz sailed a spike long for 23-21. Kim Yeon-Koung spiked again and it was match point at 24-21. She did it once more and it was over at 25-21.
