Serbia raise record to 4-2 with four-set victory over Peru


Serbia had a 15-7 advantage in blocks during the 3-1 victory over Peru on Saturday

Tokyo, Japan, May 26, 2012 -  European champion Serbia downed Peru in four sets (25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21) on the sixth day of action in the FIVB Women's World Olympic Qualifying Tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gym on Saturday.

Serbia dominated the first two sets with a strong attack, before Peru awoke in the third and gave the Europeans a battle. The victory improved Serbia's record to 4-2, while Peru slid to 1-5. 

Jovana Vesovic paced Serbia with 17 points. Tijana Malesevic and Milena Rasic contributed 12 points apiece in the win. Karla Ortiz notched a match-high 20 points for Peru. Carla Rueda added 18 and Clarivett Ylescas chipped in 10.

Serbia won the battle at the net with a 15-7 advantage in blocks while Peru was better in the service area 6-2.

A spike by Karla Ortiz sailed long and Serbia moved out to a 5-2 in the opening set. An Ortiz spike made it 6-4 for Serbia. Vesovic's spike put Serbia up 7-6 and Jovana Brakocevic's block made it 8-7 at the first TTO. With Serbia up 12-7, Peru called timeout. A nice dink by Natasa Krsmanovic made it 13-8. Rueda's spike made the score 14-9 for Serbia. Veljkovic's block took it to 15-9 and Serbia was on top 16-9 at the second TTO. A dink by Rueda made it 16-10. Vesovic's spike gave Serbia a six-point lead at 20-14. A service ace by Vesovic put Serbia within three points of the set at 22-15 and Peru took a timeout. A missed block by Peru took the count to 24-16 and Serbia claimed the set 25-16 when Rueda sent a spike long.

A block by Maja Ognjenovic gave Seriba a 5-3 lead in the second set. Krsmanovic's block put Serbia up 8-4 at the first TTO. A service ace by Clarivett Yllescas made it 8-6. Krsmanovic's block took it to 10-6. Peru called a timeout while behind 14-8. Serbia led 16-8 at the second TTO. A service ace by Soto made it 19-13. Vesovic replied with a huge spike for 20-13. A spike by Ortiz went long and Serbia was two points from the set at 23-16. A reception error by Peru gave Serbia set point at 24-17 and they clinched the set 25-18 when Soriano's serve flew long.

Ortiz's spike gave Peru a 5-2 lead in the third set. Rueda's spike made it 8-6 for Peru at the first TTO. Serbia scored three straight points to go up 9-6. Peru went back in front 12-11 on an Ortiz spike. A block by Daniela Uribe made it 15-12 for Peru. Peru led 16-15 at the second TTO. A block by Rasic put Serbia back up 18-17. A powerful spike by Rueda gave Peru a 20-19 edge. Rueda's spike made it 21-19 and Serbia called time. Vesovic served into the net and Peru led 22-20. A net infraction by Peru evened the score at 22-22 and Peru took a timeout. Daniela Uribe's spike made it 23-22 for Peru and a block by Ginna Lopez gave Peru set point at 24-22. An Ortiz spike gave Peru the set 25-22.

Serbia moved out to a 5-4 lead in the fourth set. A Rasic spike put Serbia on top 7-6. Peru led 8-7 at the first TTO after Sanja Starovic sent a spike long. A spike by Ortiz made it 10-9 for Peru. Ognjenovic's spike put Serbia up 12-11 as the seesaw battle continued. Peru sent a spike long and Serbia was ahead 16-13 at the second TTO. Serbia quickly boosted the lead to 18-13 and Peru called time in an attempt to stop the run. A reception error by Vesovic made it 19-17. Rasic's spike made it 23-19 and Serbia was two points from the match. Vesovic's spike gave Serbia match point at 24-21 and they closed it out 25-21 on a spike by Rasic.
