Press release

Egypt with hopes still alive

Pakistani players (here Muhammad Ismail Khan and Raza Mubashir) were considered outsiders but were very close to win a set against Egypt

Sofia, Bulgaria, June 9, 2012 - At least for several hours, Egypt stayed in the battle for the first place in FIVB Olympic Qualification Tournament in Sofia, defeating Pakistan 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 26-24). Although considered absolute outsider, the team from Asia was close to win its first set in Olympic Qualification in the history, wasting the set ball in the third at 24-23.
Egypt took an early lead over Pakistan 6-2. Despite both teams made a lot of mistakes especially on serve, later Egypt increased the difference to 10 points mostly by Abdelhay Ahmed who was also their best scorer. The African team was definitely the better team and the result showed it 25-13.
In the second set improved their play to the higher level. At first the point difference wasn’t too big and the set was even tied up at 12-12. Pakistan tried really hard to win this time but their rival was fully concentrated and showed superiority, mostly based on experience. The set ended 25-22 only because the reception of Egypt was excellent.
The final set was the best in the match. Rivaling point-by-point until the end Egypt and Pakistan came close to volleyball that counts. For the first time in the match the team from Asia took the lead and  was really determined to finish the set in its own favour. Ahmed Naseer pulled his team ahead with really good spikes but It wasn’t enough. Although Pakistan had a match ball at 24-23 but the experience of Egypt brought them to the final victory 26-24.
