Team profile
Egypt are one of the leading men’s teams in Africa and have participated in the Olympic Games three times (1984, 2000, 2008), the FIVB World Championship seven times (1974, 1978, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010), the FIVB World Cup five times (1977, 1985, 1995, 2003, 2007) and the FIVB World League four times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010) and were the first African team to qualify for the World League.
Egypt qualified for this year’s FIVB World Cup after once again showing impressive form at continental level, winning the African Nations Championship in Morocco in September. They have been African champions six times – including the last four – and All-Africa Games champions five times.
At the last FIVB World Cup in 2007, Egypt, whose squad is usually dominated by players from Al Ahly Club, stepped up a level and were highly competitive against world-class teams. The North Africans won their last three matches to finish a respectable ninth. It is this sort of determination which is expected from Egypt. During the 2010 World Championship their innovation at the net and great team work helped them keep pace with more fancied opposition and once again, come November, it’s likely to be a similar scenario.
Coach profile
Sherif Hamdy El-Shemerly played for the Heliopoles club for 16 years whilst also going to represent Egypt as a player at the junior and senior level. As a coach, he has worked with club teams in Egypt and Qatar, and the national youth team of Qatar. Having taken over from Antonio Giacobbe as coach of Egypt in May 2011, he made an immediate impact, leading them to the African title. He has won a number of African titles with different national teams from Egypt and has also been awarded the Legion of Honour for his services to volleyball.
