Serbia clinch ticket to 2012 London Olympic Games

Serbia Qualified for the Olympic Games in London 2012

Tokyo, Japan, June 9, 2012 – European champions Serbia qualified for the Olympic Games in London with a straight-sets victory over Iran on the penultimate day of action at the FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Tokyo on Saturday. Serbia improved to a 6-0 win-loss record and raised their points total to 18. Australia’s 3-1 win over Korea put them in the driving seat for the Asian Olympic berth, but they are only a point ahead of Iran, Japan and China.  Australia will face China and Japan will clash with Iran on the final day.

Iran – Serbia
Serbia defeated Iran 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 25-22) in a scintillating match between the two top teams on the penultimate day of action in the FIVB Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Saturday. The result means Serbia have qualified for the London Olympics and they celebrated enthusiastically on court.  Iran’s Amir Ghafour led all scorers with 17 points, including eight in the first set. Serbia had four players with double digits, Milos Nikic topping Serbia’s scorers with 14 points.

Serbia coach Igor Kolakovic: ”I’m happy because we managed our great goal, which is the Olympic Games. We played against a very good Iran team, and it was tough, especially in the first two sets. But we had patience and will and did everything for the win and I am very satisfied with the victory.”

Venezuela – China
China overcame Venezuela 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 18-25, 25-21). Both teams struggled to get into any kind of rhythm early on, but Venezuela were struggling more and their attackers needed better service. China’s top scorer was Zhang Chen with 16 points, while Kervin Pinerua led Venezuela with 20 points. China outblocked Venezuela 8-6 and outserved them 10-5. China improved their record to 3-3, while Venezuela dropped to 1-5.

China coach Zhou Jianan: ”Venezuela gave us problems because of their attacking power and I have great respect for them. We made many mistakes, especially on reception and the flow of our spikes was not so smooth. It wasn’t an easy game, but we managed to get the result, so that was good.”

Australia – Korea
Australia beat Korea 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20) and is now the favourite for the Asian qualification spot from this tournament. Korea ran into trouble at the start of the match and Australia had the upper hand, with Thomas Edgar causing them plenty of problems on offence and defence.Australia were led by Aidan Zingel with 19 points, while Korea’s top scorer was Choi Hong-Suk with 21. Australia outblocked Korea 16-12 and outserved them 8-3. Australia improved their record to 4-2, while Korea dropped to 2-4.

Australia captain Igor Yudin: ”It was another do-or-die game for us, as it has been the whole tournament. Obviously, I’m very happy to get this win and it was a really tough one, probably the toughest of the tournament, but our Olympic dream is still alive.”

Japan- Puerto Rico
Japan survived a tough encounter with Puerto Rico to win 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16) in the last match on Saturday. Japan is now 4-2, while Puerto Rico dropped their sixth straight game. Tatsuya Fukuzawa and Kunihiro Shimizu were the joint top scorers for Japan with 15 points each, while Juan Figueroa led Puerto Rico with 18 points. Japan outblocked Puerto Rico 9-4, but Puerto Rico had the edge on serves, 5-2. Puerto Rico committed 36 errors to Japan’s 19.

Japan coach Tatsuya Ueta: ”In the first set, we weren’t relaxed enough to play well. From the second set, our serves and blocks became effective and our defence also got better.”
