Schmitt again dominant as Canada start Pool C in perfect fashion

Canada's Gavin Schmitt scored a game-high 19 points in Canada's 3-0 Pool C win against Cuba

Calgary, Canada, May 17, 2015 - Canada beat Cuba 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-21) for the second successive night to open their 2015 World League campaign in the finest of styles. Gavin Schmitt again led all scorers, this time with 19 points, while Cuba's skipper Rolando Cepeda Abreu top scored for the visitors with 14.

With Lazaro Raydel Fundora Travieso watching from the sidelines after injuring his knee in Cuba's opening-night loss against Canada, the visitors set out to avenge the straight-sets defeat. But despite strong blocking from Felix Emilio Chapman Pinerio and Cepeda Abreu, six first-set points from opposite Schmitt and four from Graham Vigrass helped the hosts to a 26-24 set victory.

Canada setter Tyler Sanders scored the opening two points of the second set and after Schmitt's third ace of the evening, Canada led 9-6. Cuba's blocking remained a weapon but as Schmitt worked his way to 12 points for the match, Canada took the second stanza 25-19.

The early stages of the third were punctuated by a terrific rally, but after two Toontje Van Lakvelt aces, Canada led 7-2. The hosts maintained a healthy advantage throughout the set and despite a valiant effort from the Cubans, Schmitt and Canada wouldn't be denied with their star player scoring the final point of the match for the second successive night, giving Canada a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19. 25-21) win.
