Stats Preview: Brazil, USA set for first-ever meeting in World League final; Italy eye fourth bronze medal

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 19, 2014 – Brazil and USA are set to clash in their first-ever final matchup in the competition, while hosts Italy take on Iran to gun for their fourth bronze at the FIVB Volleyball World League at the Nelson Mandela Forum on Sunday.

Brazil and USA have met 35 times in the World League with Brazil having the edge of 26 victories over the United States’ nine.  However, both teams have not faced each other in the final until they made impressive wins in straight sets against Italy and Iran in the semifinals that set out the path to arrange this meeting.

Bronze medal contenders Italy and Iran met six times in the World League, claiming three wins each.

Statistical preview – World League Finals – Day 5

- Brazil and USA meet each other for the first time since 2011 in the World League.

- USA can beat Brazil for the 10th time in the World League.

- In the Olympic Games, both teams have met in two finals – Los Angeles 1984 and Beijing 2008 – where USA claimed the gold medals.

- Brazil can win the World League for the 10th time and become the first nation with a double-digit gold haul.

Brazil last won the World League in 2010, when they beat Russia in the final.

Italy have not reached the podium in eight straight campaigns prior to 2013.

- Italy have lost seven of their last nine World League matches.

- Ivan Zaytsev is the second most prolific scorer so far in the Final Six.

- Iran can collect their first-ever medal in the World League.

- Iran aim to become the first Asian nation to win a medal in the World League.

- Iran are already the most successful Asian nation in World League history with the guaranteed top four finish.

- Amir Ghafour is the Iranian team’s scoring weapon with 63 points recorded so far.
