‘Brazil have a point to prove’ says Zorzi

Murilo must be at his brilliant best

Florence, Italy, July 17, 2014 – As the second day of the 2014 FIVB World League gets underway on Thursday, former Italian volleyball star Andrea Zorzi provides his thoughts on the day's games.

“Russia - Brazil is a ‘classic’ match. Until a couple of years ago, Brazil started as favorite, but in the last few years Russia inversed the trend. Russia gained confidence, while Brazil is still struggling with a significant generational change.

“Brazil had a hard time reaching the final, qualifying only in the final match against Italy. But if it is true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, these difficulties could act as a powerful motivation."

“Murilo Endres could prove decisive for Brazil, but only if he can go back to being the champion he used to be.”

“For Russia, I would keep an eye on Dmitriy Muserskiy, although yesterday’s match proved that he needs a team to support him.”

“The USA vs Australia match is less hard to call. USA start as favorite, although they will have to deal with a bad loss against Italy. What we saw yesterday was a bad copy of their team.”

“For Australia, the match will be an excellent occasion to play at the highest level. They are physically strong, but they are not used to these rhythms. Acting as a team is key to their performance.”

“For the USA, we’ll need to see if Sanders can help his team react to a bad loss.”

Andrea Zorzi is a former Italian volleyball star who won two FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship crowns in 1990 and 1994 as well as three World League titles from 1990-1992 where he also won the Most Valuable Player award at both the 1990 and 1991 editions. He was also a silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and won the 1989 European Championship in a career which spanned 325 matches. After retiring in 1998, he collaborated with a number of important Italian TV networks as well as international newspapers as a journalist.
