Portugal coach Hugo Silva: It’s an honour to coach such a team

Manuel Silva played his last match with the Portuguese team against Korea

Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, July 6, 2014 - Korea won 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21) over Portugal in the final Pool E encounter, but despite the loss Portugal coach Hugo Silva is proud of his team's 2014 World League campaign.

Portugal coach Hugo Silva: I don’t like to lose any player and less more one such as Manel, who is an example of dedication and is always available for the other players. I wish him the best of happiness and I thank all the support he gave me. Regarding our World League campaign, I can say that is very positive, since we were outsiders, but we fought until the last match to qualify for the Final Four. I am proud of this team and working group, so I want to thank them for their commitment, dedication and loyalty to me. It’s an honour to coach such a group.

Portugal player Manuel Silva (228 caps) also announced his retirement: It's since 1991 that I've been playing for the national team. It’s time to say goodbye, merely by personal and family issues, since physically I still feel capable of helping the team. It’s sad, but at the same time to play for the national team was a great joy. I’m glad to have taken part in all the best moments of the team and this edition of the World League is also one of those moments. A group of younger players is growing. They have been relentless in the daily work and I hope that they could take advantage of what I and other players of my generation have helped building.

Korea coach Park Kiwon: We played much better than yesterday. The big turning point was in the second set, when we were able to turn back from a very unfavourable result. It was a good victory and the best way to end this edition of the World League, a competition that served as a preparation for our participation in the Asian Games next September.
