FIVB - Volleyball World League

Press release

Tonight we saw one great team - Kovac

Press conference after the second match between Poland and Iran

Gdansk, Poland, July 5, 2014 – All Polish eyes are now on Italy against Brazil after the 2012 World League champions beat Iran 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) on Saturday to keep their Final Six hopes alive.

Iran captain Mir Saeid Marouflakrani: We had a lot of problems in reception, our numbers in side-out are not good. We have to forget about these two losses and focus on the Final Six. We had six great matches and in sport it is normal that motivation can go down sometimes.

Poland captain Michal Winiarski: We are very happy with the victory and we are still in the game for the Final Six. Now we are waiting for the Italians, hoping they will take at least one point from Brazil. We played really well in service. I'm glad that the team recovered and won two matches, which gives us the chance to qualify to the Final Six. It would be great to go to Florence and play against currently the best teams. On one hand, this would be a great test for us, but on the other hand we would have more time to rest and train, so it would not be that bad not to qualify.

Iran coach Slobodan Kovac: Yesterday I said we had played badly and today I do not know what to say. I am very angry. Poland served really well tonight. They made only 12 mistakes and had nine aces, their statistics were almost perfect. I know where my team's problem lay – we had bad reception. Tonight we saw one great team and we had nothing to say. We cannot manage the situation mentally – for the first time we play when we already have qualification for the next round. We did not show our best on the court and we did not fight. I have not worked with these players for too long and I still don't know what is going on in their heads. I don't understand how you can not give your best in the full hall and such a great atmosphere. I really don't get it and we need to work on that. I'd be a liar if I said I wanted to play against Brazil in the next round.

Poland head coach Stephane Antiga: Tonight we played a lot better than yesterday and I am very satisfied. We played very well in reception and block, we showed our character from the beginning.
