Three points most important - Makarov

Voronkov said the crowd gave the young Bulgarian team great support

Sofia, Bulgaria, July 5, 2014 - Russia coach Andrey Voronkov and captain Sergey Makarov expressed how important it was for their side to obtain all three points in their win over Bulgaria on Saturday despite their unconvincing on court performance.

Russia coach Andrey Voronkov: It was not very good for us that the main players of Bulgaria were missing. That was a surprise for us and we underestimated them, unfortunately we were wrong. That fact made us nervous and made it harder in the closing rallies. Bulgaria had a wonderful audience and that made it even harder for us. The good thing was that at the end we managed to win.

Russia captain Sergey Makarov: The game today seemed hard for us, but the important part is that we took three points from it. We are going to prepare for tomorrow and I am sure both teams will show better quality.

Bulgaria coach Nayden Naydenov: I want to congratulate the boys for today's play. It is not important that we lost, but that we played good volleyball. After the difficult situation we were in, we managed to get out of it and play as a team, united and everyone fought for each other. That was extremely important for the good result tonight.

Bulgaria captain Tsvetan Sokolov: It was an emotionally positive game for us. We played against the Olympic and European champion. Despite the loss we played skillful volleyball and we gave everything from us on the playground. We gave Russia a hard time as much as possible. It was of big importance for us to play as a team and to give our best. I hope tomorrow to play the same way and again to make it hard for Russia.
