Serbia beat USA to keep Pool B close; Belgium clinch Final Four spot

Serbia celebrate their win over USA on Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 4, 2014 – Serbia put themselves in position to clinch a spot in the FIVB World League Final Six on Friday with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) victory over Pool B leaders USA in Novi Sad. Serbia moved up to second in the standings ahead of their final match against USA in Belgrade on Sunday.

In Pool A, Iran’s run of success came to a halt when they were beaten 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23) by Poland in Gdansk. Iran have already qualified for the Final Six along with Finals hosts Italy from Pool A. Both are 6-5 and have 19 points from 11 matches. One more Final Six spot will be decided at the weekend between Poland and Brazil, who now both have 14 points.

In Pool C, World League debutants Belgium clinched the top spot and a place in the Final Four despite a 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 15-12) loss to Finland in Tampere.

Key points:

Serbia will reach the Final Six if they beat USA again on Sunday, the final day of the Intercontinental Round.
USA lead Pool B with 21 points, followed by Serbia (20 points), Russia (18) and Bulgaria (four). Russia face Bulgaria on Saturday and Sunday.
USA won their first seven matches in the Intercontinental Round but have won only once since.
Poland’s win over Iran stopped Iran’s winning streak at four. Iran had won six of their last seven games before Friday.
Poland and Brazil will fight for the last Final Six spot from Pool A. Both have 5-6 records and 14 points going into their final matches against Italy and Iran, respectively.
Belgium, France and hosts Australia have qualified for the Final Four in Sydney.
Belgium have lost all three of their five-setters in the World League this year.
In the final weekend of the Intercontinental Round, there will be six matches on Saturday and six on Sunday.
