Tampere, Finland, July, 2, 2014 – Finland want
to make a major upset on Pool C leaders Belgium when they face each other in
Tampere on Friday and Saturday on the final week of the Intercontinental Round of the FIVB Volleyball World League.
Belgium are certainly in a good position to advance to the Final Four of Group 2. Finland are now third in Pool C, where a five point difference separate them and second place team Canada. The Finns, however, are in good spirits to play well against the Belgians.
“We want to play good volleyball on both occasions, and at the same time win it,” Finland coach Tuomas Sammelviou said. “This is an important week for our team. It is important that we concentrate well on both matches and end our World League season well. Then we can go on the short break satisfied and then we can start the preparations for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Poland.”
Sammelvuo salutes the efforts of Belgium in their first World League appearance.
“Belgium have become a very strong team in the last few years,” Sammelvuo said. “In the World League, they have played consistently compared to the other teams in the pool.”
One of the key players of Finland, Olli Kunnari, took note of the characteristics of the Belgian team on offence and defence.
“Belgium play so fast, that cause the middle blockers to have difficulties when they try to block their attacks,” Kunnari said. “I hope that this weekend we can play two good matches.”
Finland will play Belgium with the same players, who were in the roster against Canada last weekend. The Finns are giving their best shot as their top players will suit up for the matches against Belgium, except for middle blocker Matti Oivanen who is suffering from a back injury.
