Iran continue run in World League; USA edge Russia 3-2

Armin Tashakori takes off as he serves against Poland on Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 27, 2014 – Iran continued their impressive run in the FIVB World League on the opening day of Week 6 on Friday with a 3-1 home win over Poland, while USA recovered from their first loss in the tournament to edge Russia 3-2 after a 21-19 fifth-set tiebreaker in Kaliningrad.

After losing their opening three games in the World League, Iran have gone 5-1 to put pressure on Italy at the top of Pool A. Iran are now only three points behind the Italians and another strong win against Poland in Tehran on Sunday will draw them level on 19 points.

After losing a close first set 23-25, Iran dominated Poland and took the next three sets 25-16, 25-11, 25-19 in the first World League meeting between the two teams. The win opened up a five-point gap in the standings between the two teams, boosting Iran’s chances of qualifying for the Final Six. Italy (6-4), who are idle this week, lead the table with 19 points, followed by Iran (5-4, 16 points), Poland (4-5, 11 points) and Brazil (4-6, 11 points).

Iran were led by the 18 points of M. Mojtaba Mirzajanpour, one of four Iranians to get into double figures. The Poles’ only player to accomplish that was Dawid Konarski, who had 17 points. Iran dominated blocking (13-4) and committed 10 fewer errors than the Poles.

Iran coach Slobodan Kovac praised the home crowd: “The Iranian spectators were fantastic and the fans were like Iran's seventh player. Poland started the match very strong and in some moments we didn't know how to react. After making some tactical changes, we started to play better.”

In Kaliningrad, USA, who suffered their first loss in the tournament last week to Bulgaria, had to hold off a storming Russian comeback in a very tight 3-2 (25-18, 25-19, 25-27, 19-25, 21-19) victory, their third straight over the Russians in this year’s World League. Matthew Anderson, who plays in Russia with Zenit Kazan, led the Americans with a tournament-high 36 points, while Dmitriy Muserskiy of Russia put up 10 blocks, also a tournament high.

In the other match in Pool B, Serbia rolled past Bulgaria 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) in Novi Sad. USA (8-1) top the table with 21 points, followed by Russia (4-5) on 15 points, Serbia (5-4) on 14 points and Bulgaria (1-8) with four points.

In Pool D, Argentina had to dig deep to overcome France 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-13) and are now just two points behind the group leaders. The two teams will meet again on Sunday.

In Pool E, the Czech Republic had to come from two sets down as they defeated leaders Portugal 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-11) in the Czech city of Opava. Portugal lead the table with 16 points, followed by the Netherlands on 14, the Czechs on 12 and Korea on nine.

In Pool C, Belgium overcame hosts Australia 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20), while Finland won 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 26-24) at home to Canada. Belgium have won all three of their matches against Australia in this year’s tournament and are the pool leaders on 20 points, followed by Canada (14 points), Finland (12) and Australia (eight).
