USA stay unbeaten in World League, Russia get first win

Defending champions Russia picked up their first win in five attempts

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 14, 2014 – USA maintained their unbeaten streak in Pool B of the FIVB World League on Saturday but they had to work hard to overcome Serbia 3-2 (25-22, 25-12, 26-28, 23-25, 15-13) in Chicago. Meanwhile defending champions Russia picked up their first win in five games by beating Bulgaria 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-15) on home soil in Surgut.

USA now have a 6-0 record and 15 points, four more than second-placed Serbia. Russia have five points and Bulgaria two. Russia and Bulgaria will meet again on Sunday.

USA’s Matthew Anderson equalled the tournament high individual score of 32 points and was supported by Taylor Sander with 26. USA also equalled the top blocking score in the World League so far with 18 block points.

Russia won the battle between the two winless teams in Pool B as Bulgaria struggled to get into the game in Surgut. Playing at home gave Russia added motivation to win and the Russians responded well.

“Our position in the pool leaves much to be desired, so we were determined to win tonight,” Russia captain Sergey Makarov said. “We were really stronger in all aspects today.”

The Final Four for Pools F and G was decided as Slovakia beat China 3-0 and Turkey beat Mexico by the same score. With one match to go for all teams, Cuba, who beat Tunisia 3-0 on Saturday, have secured top place in Group F and Turkey, 3-0 winners over Mexico, will finish second. As hosts of the Final Four in Bursa, Turkey had already qualified. In Pool G, China have 11 points to Slovakia’s 10 and neither can be overtaken by Puerto Rico (five points) or Spain (four points). Puerto Rico beat Spain 3-2 on Saturday.

In Pool C, Belgium fought back to defeat Canada 3-1 in Vancouver and retake the lead in the standings. Belgium and Canada are now both 4-2 but Belgium have a three-point advantage at the top of the table. Meanwhile Australia picked up their second win of the tournament by beating Finland 3-1 on the road in Tampere.

In Pool D, Argentina had little trouble defeating hosts Japan 3-0 in Komaki, while in Pool E, the Netherlands and Portugal scored 3-1 wins over the Czech Republic and Korea, respectively.

There will be 11 more matches on Sunday, including two big clashes in Pool A when Iran host Brazil and Poland play at home to Italy.
