Iran defeat Brazil again; Germany end France's unbeaten run

Germany celebrate their victory over France on Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 13, 2014 – Iran continued their solid performances against Brazil in the FIVB World League on Friday, while France’s unbeaten run in the tournament was halted by Germany. In other matches, unbeaten USA overcame Serbia 3-0 for a record fifth straight win – and Serbia’s first defeat – while 2012 champions Poland handed runaway Pool A leaders Italy their first loss.

Iran lost their opening Pool A clash against Brazil 3-2 in Brazil last week before routing the Olympic silver medallists 3-0 in their second match. On home turf in Tehran on Friday, the Iranians recovered from 0-1 and 1-2 to edge the Brazilians 3-2 (18-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-9).

“Most volleyball experts described Iran as the weakest team in the World League, but the reality is something different,” Iran captain Saeid Marouf said. "We have always been backed by the fans, who double our motivation to win, even against the world champions Brazil. I believe the engines of volleyball in Iran are working very well.”

In the other match in Pool A, Poland edged Italy 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 25-27, 15-10). “There was a lot of confusion in this match,” Italy coach Mauro Berruto said. “Regardless of the result, it was a very good match and I am very happy with what my team did today, especially the young players. We showed that we came here to play tough matches and we proved that we are capable of doing so.”

In a matchup of two unbeaten teams in Pool B, Matt Anderson scored 25 points to lead USA to a solid 3-0 (30-28, 25-20, 25-16) victory over Serbia in Chicago. “We had some scoring opportunities early in the first set that we didn’t take advantage of,” USA coach John Speraw said. “I felt that we were lucky in some ways to win that first set. From then on, I thought that the offence of Taylor Sander and Matt Anderson was so efficient and we passed the ball so well that we were playing at a very high level offensively.”

In the French city of Rouen, Germany narrowly lost the first set before rolling over the French 3-1 (26-28, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18) in Pool D. It was France’s first loss after six straight wins, while Germany improved to 4-3. “We miraculously won the first set,” France coach Laurent Tillie conceded. “We were outplayed in all areas and we suffered a real blow tonight. Everything was bad.”

In other matches on Friday, Canada beat Belgium 3-0 in Vancouver in Pool C and the Netherlands overcame the Czech Republic 3-2 in Chomutov in Pool E.

In Pool F matches in Tunis, Turkey defeated Tunisia 3-1 and Cuba cruised past Mexico 3-0, while in the two Pool G matches in Kosice, Slovakia beat Puerto Rico 3-1 and China overcame Spain 3-2.

There will be 11 World League matches on Saturday.
