Eternal City embraces the Azzurri ahead of Poland clash

The Tennis Centre at the Foro Italico has been transformed for volleyball

Rome, Italy, June 7, 2014 – Italy’s volleyball fans are ready to turn the Foro Italico Sports Complex into a sea of blue when their favourites take on Poland in the FIVB Volleyball World League on Sunday.

Mauro Berruto’s team take on Poland in the centre court of the Tennis Centre and already all 10,500 tickets have been snapped up for the World League match of the week, a fixture that is available free to air on FIVB.org, with the start scheduled for 20.00.

Italian fans have good reason to attend the match in confident mood after their heroes wrapped up a fifth consecutive win in the competition against Poland in Bari on Friday.

“The passion is overwhelming us and I’m proud of that,” Berruto said. “We can’t wait for this match to start. We want to win to as a way of marking this historical match and show we deserve this audience and this stage.”

It will be the first time that the Tennis Centre has hosted a match and the first time that a fixture has taken place in the open air. That said centre court is no stranger to FIVB events, having been packed to capacity for the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship and 2012 FIVB Grand Slam.

The match is to be the centre piece of celebrations for the centenary of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), with a plethora of sporting events for the public to join in at the Foro Italico.

A number of measure have been put in place to ensure that the match can go ahead in the open air, most notably machines that will line the court to stop too much condensation forming on the court.

In case of rain the Italian Volleyball Federation has already provisionally booked the Palalottomatica arena in the EUR area of the city as a substitute venue.
