Spain raring to go ahead of World League return

Spain are returning to the World League after an absence of six years

Carolina, Puerto Rico, June 6, 2014 – It has been six long years for Spain’s male volleyball players, but now that they are back in the FIVB Volleyball World League, they are champing at the bit to get back on court.

Fernando Munoz’s team have already had a taste of the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum where they will play their Pool G matches over the next three days. On Friday they take on Slovakia, followed by China on Saturday and finally the hosts, Puerto Rico, on Sunday.

“We are thrilled to be here,” Spanish captain, Guillermo Hernan said. “We are looking forward to being able to demonstrate our level and to show the whole world that this group of young players is destined for big things.”

Coach Munoz is giving young players their chances in a team that is without opposite Andres Villena and wing-spikers Gustavo Delgado and Sergio Noda. As such Guillermo Hernan and Manuel Sevillano, the two remaining players from the 2007 CEV European Championship winning team, will be the team’s leaders.

“We are indeed a young group and it will not be easy for us,” Hernan said. “It will be hard for us to reach the required level to compete in this tournament, but once the first match is over I am certain that our teammates will find a way to show their real intensity of performance, so that we can succeed against our rivals in the competition.”
