Belgium ready to build on opening success

Belgium had plenty to celebrate in the opening weekend with two wins over Australia

Brussels, Belgium, June 5, 2014 – Belgium have been quick to turn their attentions to Canada having beaten Australia twice in their opening round of matches.

Dominque Baeyens charges take on the North Americans in Country Hall in Liege on Friday June 6 and then meet for their second encounter two days later at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp.

However, Baeyens’ charges will have to be at their best against a Canada side who opened Pool C with two victories over Finland and who recently qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.

“We are ready for them,” Baeyens said. “We will meet this team with a lot of respect, because they are experienced in this competition and last year they reached the Final Six and beat eventual winners Russia.

“With their opposite (Gavin) Schmitt and the experienced (Frederic) Winters they can make it difficult for any team. Only their service is not so strong, but in every other part of the game they can reach a high level.”

Opposite Gert Van Walle is the only change to the Belgium team and the Belgians are well aware that they need to take maximum points from their home matches if they wish to progress, especially as they will be cheered on by around 4,000 supporters at both venues.

“It is not a question that (Hendrik) Tuerlinckx is not in a good shape, but just as last year we will rotate our team,” Baeyens said. “At the end of this competition practically every player will have had one week of rest. That is also how we want to combat jetlag after transfers to Australia and Canada. For us this is a new situation.

“We are in the ‘flow’ to continue our good start in the World League. Our aim, as always is to reach the Final Four in Sydney.”
