Serbian players take time out to visit schoolchildren, orphans in Nis

The children show their joy at meeting the Serbian team

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 30, 2014 – Serbia’s players may have their FIVB World League clash with Russia on their minds this weekend, but they still had time to think about some of their younger fans in the city of Nis.

The Serbian players were energised as they met around 1,000 children at the Dušan Radovi? Elementary School as a part of the “Volleyball Connects” project promoted by the Volleyball Federation of Serbia and sponsor Vip Mobile.

Team members had fun with elementary school pupils and residents of the Duško Radovic orphanage, which they also visited back in January.

The pupils were addressed by Milan Peši?, City of Niš councilor in charge of sports; Slobodan Milosševi?, secretary general of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia; school principal Božidar Stoši?; and Dragan Stankovi?, team captain of Serbia.

After the speeches, the children were given gifts, balls and jerseys, and were then treated to an exhibition match named “Volleyball Connects.”

In addition to the entire Serbian men's, the gathering was also attended by members of the Russian delegation, FIVB Supervisor Libenzio Conti, and referees Akihiko Tano and Valed Abdelsamad.

It was all spontaneous and beautiful; these kids welcomed us with open hearts and we appreciate it,” said Slobodan Miloševi?, secretary general of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia. “In this difficult moment for our country, I think this will be one beautiful memory for all of us. The most important thing is that our kids are happy.”

FIVB Supervisor Conti commented: “This is really extraordinary. I think the Volleyball Federation of Serbia is the only national federation that is doing these kind of actions and I would like the rest of them to follow. I congratulate you; it is really impressive. This is important for children, for us and for the players, because this means a lot for youngsters who are looking up to these guys.”

Serbia captain Stankovi? was touched by the visit: “This is really unexpected, impressive, beautiful. We have done these kinds of events before, but such a large number of kids none of us experienced. I am very happy because we are very well appreciated here in the city of Niš, and I hope that we will spread the good spirit and love for sports throughout the whole country. I invite all the kids to come and see us on Friday and Saturday.”

Suitably inspired, the Serbian team went on to beat Russia 3-2 in their first game in Nis on Friday.
