Meanwhile Italy continued their dominant start to the tournament by easing past Iran 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) in Trieste.
Serbia and Russia put on a five-set thriller in their encounter, with the home side eventually edging the win. However the visitors refused to go down without a fight, coming back from a two set deficit to almost steal a sixth World League win in seven matches against their European rivals.
Russia captain Sergey Makarov blamed a slow start and a faltering reception for his side’s loss.
“We had big problems in reception in the first two sets which made us lose, but we succeeded in regaining the strength to bring the result to 2-2, but we failed to continue in the fifth and this led to the result,” he said.
Poland dealt hosts Brazil their third loss of the 2014 competition as the world No.1’s joy at a first win on Thursday proved to be temporary. It was the first time the Poles had beaten their hosts in three matches and sees them end the day second in Pool A despite having two matches in hand. Captain Michal Ruciak was ecstatic with the result, citing the composure of his young team mates.
"We have a young and talented team,” he said. “Yesterday we had our chances, but we were not able to close the sets. Today it was different. Our team handled the pressure, playing Brazil in front of their home crowd."
Finally Italy sealed their first home win of the tournament by seeing off Iran in Trieste. They now top Pool A following a pair of sensational opening weekend victories over Brazil. Coach Mauro Berruto praised his whole team, but picked out one individual who made the difference for him.
"There should be a special mention for Parodi, because he took responsibility at key moments in the match," he said.
The 2014 FIVB Volleyball World League continues on Saturday with six matches across four pools.
