Pool B is the strongest group - Russia coach Voronkov

The captains and coaches of Serbia and Russia attend a press conference in Nis before their World League games

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 29, 2014 – Serbia and Russia will open their FIVB World League campaigns this weekend, with the two Pool B teams meeting in the Serbian town of Nis on Friday and Saturday. The second match will be the FIVB’s “Match of the Week.” The captains and coaches of the two teams attended a press conference on Thursday.

Sergey Makarov, captain of Russia:
We would like to thank the organisers for their welcome and hospitality. We have a very tough task as Group 1 is the strongest with the best teams, but we will try to play our best. It is important for both teams to win to qualify for the Finals and it will be difficult for both.

Andrey Voronkov, coach of Russia:
We hereby thank the organisers of the tournament, especially as this is the first major volleyball event following the great flood disaster in Serbia. We feel deeply for the people of Serbia.

We know that this is the strongest group and we will have to play very good in both matches, in particular as we will be playing with an experimental team, some who came through rehabilitation, some new and some who have come back to play for the national team. We hope that this will not affect the team and that we will have the best possible performance in this new season, providing motivation for all to present themselves in the best light.

Igor Kolakovic, coach of Serbia:
We are glad to be here in Nis with its fantastic spectators who have proven many times to be excellent in their wonderful support for us. We will do our best to play great matches, but it is easy to say this during the press conference. It will be much harder when we get to the court. We are playing against a rival whose results have shown what they know and how they play. Regardless of their composition, I am sure they will play excellent volleyball and go for the victory. Certainly they are one of the favourites for the Final Six.

Dragan Stankovic, captain of Serbia:
I know that we will do the same as our rivals and I hope we will make a very good result tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Playing with the strongest team at the very beginning can make it easier for us, motivating us to win our home matches as we go through each weekend, playing our best.
