James Blunt to headline massive Canberra volleyball weekend

Canberra, Australia, May 28, 2014 - In a major coup for Australian volleyball fans, international recording star James Blunt has been announced as the headline act at the opening ceremony for the Volleyroos FIVB World League match against Finland at Canberra’s AIS Arena on Saturday, June 7.

The world famous singer songwriter was thrilled to be asked to perform at such a big event in Volleyball Australia’s history.

James Blunt has sold nearly 17 million albums and 20 million singles, and is sure to have the AIS crowd in full voice ahead of the Volleyroos first FIVB World League match on home soil.

He has released four number one singles, including “You’re Beautiful”, and “Goodbye My Lover”.

Currently in Australia as part of his Moon Landing 2014 World Tour, James Blunt is expected to perform his single ‘Bonfire Heart’ to the delight of the volleyball fans.

Fans will get to see James Blunt perform for the cost of a ticket to the volleyball.

Volleyball Australia President, Craig Carracher, was thrilled James Blunt had agreed to perform and said his appearance underlined the importance and the standing of the weekend.

“We are delighted and excited he accepted our invitation as we are repositioning the sport of volleyball as world class entertainment within Australia. There could have not been a better fit.”

The Volleyroos are back in the World League after a 15-year absence, and will be keen to improve on their double loss on the road to Belgium of the first weekend of World League matches.

Capacity crowds at both Belgian venues helped lift the home side to victory, and Carracher is hopeful Australian crowds will be equally supportive.

“As we host our first World League game in Australia, it was imperative to make a statement on the significance of this event. James Blunt’s performance is that statement. A performance from his World Tour at the World League.”

Australia will play Finland on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, at Canberra’s AIS Arena.
