France, Belgium open World League campaigns with two victories

France are on a five-match winning streak after beating Argentina twice in the opening weekend of the FIVB Volleyball World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 25, 2014 – France made short work of Argentina in straight sets, while newcomers Belgium paced Australia in a four-setter, to record double victories in the opening weekend of the FIVB Volleyball World League on Sunday.

In Mendoza, France kept their composure against Argentina to secure the match in straight sets (26-24, 25-18, 25-22) in Pool D. France started a bit shaky in the first set, allowing Argentina to control the tempo, but Kevin Tillie and Antonin Rouzier scored crucial points to rattle off the first set win in their favour. Although Argentina exerted more effort against the French side in the second and third frames, the former could not contain the powerful serves of the French. Likewise, their attacks could not penetrate the solid wall that France mounted on them.

“We were ready for a big fight tonight,” France coach Laurent Tillie said. “We changed our service and blocking during the game and that worked for us. I’m proud about the way we received, we controlled the ball as Argentina did yesterday, and that made things much easier for us.”

After these back-to-back victories, France have set a winning streak of five for the first time since their five victories from the period of July 2004 to May 2005.

Meanwhile, Belgium routed Australia as they recovered from their first set blunder to secure a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16) win in Pool C in Liege. The debuting team seems to be treading the right path after picking up their second victory in the tournament. The best result by a debuting team since the start of this century is a fourth place finish by the Czech Republic in 2003. With these positive results and their rising popularity, the Belgians might have a crack in achieving this feat.

“We dreamed of this result but we have to realise it,” Belgium coach Dominique Baeyens said. “Australia made it difficult for us in the first two sets. They played with strong service pressure but fortunately, we got the advantage. It is nice to see how volleyball is more and more popular in our country.”

On the other hand, the Australians have yet to earn a victory in the World League, where they have lost all 14 matches since participating in the tournament.

The second week of FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 continues on May 30 to June 1.
