Serbia win friendlies in Slovenia

Slovenia and Serbia have prepared for the FIVB Volleyball World League by playing two friendly matches together

Kanal ob Soci, Slovenia, May 12, 2014 – Slovenia played host to Serbia for two friendly matches over the weekend in preparation for the start of their international campaigns this season.

Serbia succeeded in both encounters with a 3-2 (25-21, 26-28, 25-20, 19-25, 15-12) victory in the first match and a 3-1 (25-2, 25-22, 13-25, 25-20) triumph in the second match.

Slovenia started its preparations at the end of April while the Serbian team gathered only on May 1. Serbian coach Igor Kolakovic is waiting for seven more players to join his squad before they start with their FIVB Volleyball World League campaign on May 30.

Slovenia’s coach Luka Slabe and Serbia’s Kolakovic allowed several players the chance to play in the two friendly matches which was a good test for both sides.

“We won 3-2 but there are still a couple of things that we could have done better and our victory could have been clearer,” said Kolakovic after the first match. “We only gathered last May 1 and there are things to improve, but I am satisfied.

Slabe stressed that his team needed to improve on several things in the next few days until the European Championship qualifiers in Wroclaw, Poland.

“We are doing well in training but we still lack a little discipline during the match,” said Slabe.

With the conclusion of the friendly matches, the Serbian team is set to stand the true test at the FIVB’s premiere event, the World League.

Serbia share the World League limelight in Pool B of Group 1 with standouts Bulgaria, Russia and USA in the Intercontinental Round.

Russia will be looking to notch up another victory and defend their World League title, which places the Serbian team in one of the most difficult pools in the competition.

Another big challenge for the Serbians is the Bulgarian team, which finished in fourth place last season. Even though Serbia had a better finish than USA last year, the Americans are expected to bounce back in 2014.
