Canada aim to build on success

Canada captain Frederic Winters celebrates winning a point at the FIVB Volleyball World League 2013

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 6, 2014 – Canada’s team for the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 was announced yesterday by Volleyball Canada. After their exceptional performance in the 2013 edition of the competition, when the Canadian men’s national team pulled off one of the biggest wins in their history, Head Coach Glenn Hoag’s protégés will hope to perform well against their opponents in Pool C.

In 2013, Canada’s performance in the World League resulted in a seven place gain in the FIVB rankings, taking them from No. 18 to No. 11. Canada also defeated 2013 FIVB World League champions and world No. 2 Russia for the first time ever, extending its national record to nine World League victories in one year, including a national record seven-match World League winning streak. In so doing, Canada joined Korea (2008) as the only team in 15 years to come back from two sets down to beat Russia in the World League.

This year, Canada is the top-ranked team (11) in Pool C, facing Belgium (37), Australia (14) and Finland (30). Glenn Hoag, who has returned to the National Team after coaching in Turkey for the pro season, commented that “It is great to be back in Canada and preparing for another edition of World League. We are looking to build on the success of 2013, when our team won its pool, and provide Canadian volleyball fans with some great live action in our home games.”

The FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 matches played in Canada will be in Calgary on May 31 and June 1 versus Finland; Vancouver on June 13 and 14 against Belgium; and Edmonton on June 20 and 21 where Canada host Australia.

Canada's roster for the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 includes: Tyler Sanders, John Gordon Perrin, Daniel Lewis, Jason DeRocco, Rudy Verhoeff, Justin Duff, Dallas Soonias, Adam Simac, Dustin Schneider, Toontje Van Lankvelt, Steve Brinkman, Gavin Schmitt, Christopher Hoag, Adam Kaminski, Frederic Winters (Captain), Steve Gotch, Graham Vigrass, Nicholas Hoag, Blair Bann, Ciaran McGovern, Jay Blankenau and Steven Marshall.

The excitement and action of the World League is set to get more intense this year as the 25th edition of the FIVB World League sees the competition increase from 18 to 28 teams split into seven pools of four teams each.

It is the first time the FIVB’s premiere event will feature such a large number of teams having had 16 teams from 2001-2003 and 2006-2012. The World League featured eight teams in its inaugural year in 1990, 10 in 1991, 12 from 1992-2000 and 2004-05 and then 18 in the 2013 edition. Click here for more information.
