Vital Heynen aims to win a medal in the next three years

Germany coach Vital Heynen aims to get a medal in the next three years, starting with the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship in Poland

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 22, 2014 – Germany coach Vital Heynen shares his outlook on his team in the FIVB Volleyball World League and the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, and his high hopes for his team in the next three years – to win a medal.

The coach recalls Germany’s last winning exploit was more than four decades ago, when East Germany won silver at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games. Heynen contemplated on the medal drought of the team which prompted him to aim for a medal.

“Over the past three years, we’ve been working on the development of the team and now we want to win a medal,” said Heynen. “We must believe in our chances, otherwise all our hard work would not make sense at all.”

“In the next three years, we want to win a medal in Poland 2014 World Championship, the European Championship in 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” added Heynen.

Although he is uncertain on the players who will be present when national team training resumes on May 5, Heynen is confident on the quality of his players in the national team.

“The players this year are very good,” said Heynen. “Last January, we were able to win all three matches in the qualification tournament for the World Championship. We have done a good job there.”

With their successful stint in the World Championship qualifiers, Heynen believes that their participation and result in the World League will help them get a good performance in the World Championship.

“The World League gives us the opportunity to prepare for our targeted event,” said Heynen. “We do not want to lose a fight, I will not accept failure even if we take these games as a period of preparation.”

Germany will be competing against Japan in the Intercontinental Round of the World League, then they will also face France and Argentina.

Heynen is certain that Argentina will be strong, as they are rebuilding their game which will definitely show progress under coach Julio Velasco.

“He is treated as a national hero (in Argentina),” said Heynen referring to coach Velasco. “He returned to his homeland to lead the national team. In my opinion, Argentina will be playing their top players from the start of competition in the World League.”
