Lausanne, Switzerland, May 8, 2014 – The FIVB is
pleased to announce the return of the FIVB Volleyball World League ‘Match of
the Week’, the programme which allows broadcasters to televise for free, one
match from each week of the FIVB’s premier annual tournament for men.
The specially selected ‘Match of the Week’, an initiative launched in 2008, is available to the World League’s host broadcasters as well as other TV channels with the aim of spreading volleyball into regions where the sport has the potential to grow.
This year’s selection of matches will feature the pool A and B teams in the tournament. This year, Pool A sees two of the most successful countries in the 24-year history of the World League with world No. 1 and nine-time champions Brazil along with eight time winners Italy, 2012 champions Poland and the rapidly improving Iran. In Pool B are defending champions Russia, 2012 silver medallists USA, fourth-placed team at last year’s World League, Bulgaria and four-time runners-up Serbia.
The seven matches will be distributed by IMG free
of charge to all major international networks and the host broadcaster. The
matches will include English commentary and will be shown live and on demand on
FIVB Web TV, geo-blocked only in countries where respective rights have been
The first 'Match of the Week' will see Brazil (WR 1), last year’s World League silver medallists and current World Champions, take on Italy (WR 3) in a pool A match on May 24 at 10:00 at the Arena Jaragua in Jaragua Do Sul, Brazil.
Week two will see Serbia (WR 9) take on 2013 World League
title holder and Olympic champion Russia (WR 2) in a pool B home match on May 31 at 20:00 at the Cair Sports Centre in Nis, Serbia.
In week three fans will be able to watch Italy take on the Men’s World Championship host, Poland (WR 5) in a pool A match on June 8 at 20:00 at the Foro Italico in Roma.
In week four fans will be able to watch USA
(WR4) host Serbia
in a pool A match on
June 14 at 19:00 in Chicago at the UIC Pavillion, while week five will
see Poland take on Brazil on June 22 at 19:30 at Luczniczka Hall in Bydgoszcz. Week
six will feature Russia again, this time taking on USA in a pool B match on
June 28 at 18:00 at the Yantarny Arena in Kaliningrad. In week 7 fans will
be able to watch Bulgaria (WR 6) host Russia in a pool B match on July 6 at
20:00 at the Arena Armeec in Sofia. All times are GMT.
This year the English commentary for the matches will be provided by Charles Brougham, Clayton Lucas and Jonathan Harris-Bass.

Clayton Lucas has 10 years broadcast experience across a wide range of sports, with in-depth volleyball knowledge having covered every major volleyball competition since 2003 and having played to the highest level representing England and Great Britain, before moving into the world of media.
Jonathan Harris-Bass is a freelance sports presenter, commentator and voice over artist.
The FIVB Volleyball World League is set to begin on
May 23 with the Finals taking place on July 20.
The excitement and action of the World League is set to get more intense this year as the 25th edition of the FIVB World League sees the competition increase from 18 to 28 teams split into seven pools of four teams each.
It is the first time the FIVB’s premiere event will feature such a large number of teams having had 16 teams from 2001-2003 and 2006-2012. The World League featured eight teams in its inaugural year in 1990, 10 in 1991, 12 from 1992-2000 and 2004-05 and then 18 in the 2013 edition.
