Top players on form for clubs ahead of World League

Polish star Bartosz Kurek is in top form ahead of the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 after leading his club Macerata into the Italian League finals

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 18, 2014 – With just over a month away from the start of the FIVB Volleyball World League on May 23, a number of players likely to star in volleyball’s premier annual men's competition are on top form at club level.

Brazilian Wallace was the top scorer for Sada Cruzeiro as they clinched the Superliga in Brazil and will be looking to repeat his 2013 MVP performance when the defending champions host the FIVB Club World Championship from May 5 to 10.

In Italy, Bartosz Kurek of Poland top-scored as Macerata beat Modena 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 34-32) to clinch a 3-0 series win last Sunday in the semifinals of Italy’s Serie A1. Kurek collected 15 points and was supported by Italian super scorer Ivan Zaytsev (14 points) and Serbia’s Marko Podrascanin (11 points). Modena were led by another Serbian international, Nikola Kovacevic, with 14 points.

Last Saturday, Piacenza overcame Perugia 3-2 (25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-13) to take a 2-1 lead in the other semifinal matchup, but the series was levelled 2-2 when Perugia clinched a 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-8) victory in Game 4 on Wednesday with one of Italy's brightest young stars Luca Vettori top scoring in the match with 25 points for Perugia. The deciding Game 5 will take place on Monday.

Serbia’s Aleksandar Atanasijevic led Piacenza in Game 4 with 21 points and was supported by compatriot Nemanja Petric – who delivered the winning shot – with 18 points. In Game 3, Atanasijevic’s 31 points were to no avail as former internationals Hristo Zlatanov (Italy - 24 points) and Robertlandy Simon (Cuba - 20 points) combined to steer Piacenza to victory.

Meanwhile in the quarterfinal playoffs of the Russian Superleague, Swede Marcus Nilsson’s 29 points helped Kuzbass Kemerovo overcome Dynamo CR and level the series at 1-1. He was assisted by Germany’s Andre Bjorn with 20 points. Nilsson’s former team Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, last year’s CEV champions, took a 2-0 lead over Torch on the back of 27 points from Russian Paul Frost and 21 from Cuba’s Camejo Halo.
