FIVB - Volleyball World League

Press release

Finals set for some World League teams, Serbia officially out

Finland's Olli Kunnari flew across the air when he attacked from three metres against the Netherlands.

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 06, 2013 – Brazil, Canada, Finland are still in running for FIVB World League finals, Portugal’s decision will wait until Sunday, and Serbia’s chances came to an end after its loss against Italy.

Canada defeated Japan 3-1 (25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20) on the first day of their FIVB World League two-match series at Osaka Municipal Gymnasium on Saturday. Canada entered Saturday's match still having a chance at advancing to the finals in Mar del Plata, Argentina, later this month. The Canadians (7-2) are currently second in Group C with 21 points, one behind leader the Netherlands. Canada has won five straight matches, including sweeps of Korea and Finland the past two weeks.

Brazil came back from a set behind for the second day in a row to beat Bulgaria 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in their FIVB World League fixture on Saturday. Brazil remains at the top of Pool A with 19 points, and are close to qualifying for the final stages in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Bulgaria remains second in Pool A, with 14 points.

Some sensational blocks by Finland helped the team get a win after five consecutive losses Saturday. Finland beat the Netherlands 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20) and fended off the threat to have to qualify to retain its place in the World League next year. For the Dutch, the loss was a heavy blow. Canada can now lose 2-3 against Japan on Sunday and still overtake the Dutch to secure a spot in the World League finals in Argentina.

Serbia lost to Italy on Saturday 2-3 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 17-19), diminishing all chances to qualify for the FIVB World League finals. Ivan Zaytsev of Italy topped the scorers’ chart with 29 points, while Aleksandar Atanasijevic of Serbia scored 25 for the losing team.

Germany came back from a loss Friday to beat Russia 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 18-16). With the win, Germany’s team (14 points) racked up the line to Italy (19 points), and has the chance to catch the Italian team with another win next week.

Portugal only needed two points today to secure third place in Pool C and a spot in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World League, but Korea blocked those hopes, winning 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21) delaying all the decisions until tomorrow’s match. Korea took the lead with the first point of the first set, and continued with a long rally, that Korea won. The moment confirmed Portugal’s suspicions about the difficulties they would experience by playing with a spirited team, with the players motivating each other, combined with fast attack plays.
