Russia and Bulgaria beat Brazil and Argentina respectively on day one


Russia's Nikolay Pavlov - here on attack against Brazil - and Tsevan Sokolov continued their top scoring exploits by registering 27 and 29 points respectively on day one

Mar del Plata, Argentina, July 17, 2013  - Olympic champions Russia repeated their London 2012 final performance against world No. 1 Brazil with a 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11) win in the opening game of the FIVB Volleyball World League Finals while Bulgaria stretched their winning sequence against Argentina to eight matches following a 3-1 (28-26, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23) victory in the second match of the day.

The wins mean Russia and Bulgaria have taken a giant step towards the World League semifinals while Brazil must now beat Canada in their second Pool E match on Friday while Argentina face a tough Italian Pool D assignment on the same day.

Russia play their final pool match against Canada on Thursday while Bulgaria play Italy.

Russia beat Brazil in another five set thriller
Olympic champions Russia took a significant step towards the FIVB Volleyball World League 2013 semifinals with an impressive 3-2 (25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11) win over nine-time winners Brazil in the opening match of the FIVB World League Finals on Wednesday.
