Press release

USA coach: 'We have to serve better, we have to pass the ball better and we have to keep working hard until we do.'

The press conference before the match between Poland and the USA in Wroclaw, Poland

Wroclaw, Poland, July 7, 2013 – On Sunday evening, Poland took a victory over the United States of America in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-23) to finish up the sixth week of the 2013 FIVB World League in their last home game in Wroclaw.

“Tonight we struggled with concentration and focus throughout the match,” said USA captain Matthew Anderson. “We played well overall, but I think if we could take those last six-seven points and play that way the entire match, then the outcome could be a little bit different. We have to rest now and then watch some videos of our matches. We have to work on our serves and on being able to keep pressure on the opposite team.”

“We made another small step towards better play and the Final Six,” said Poland’s captain Marcin Mozdzonek. “Tonight's game was definitely better in terms of technical skills on both sides. We will now focus on continuing to improve. We focus on the next match, on every point and every set. We know what to expect in Bulgaria and we are prepared for that.”

“I would like to thank the Polish Federation and the fans here in Poland for creating a great environment and a very professional event,” said head coach of the US team, John Speraw. “I think it's great for my players to play in such a great atmosphere. It was very challenging and it probably helped the Polish team as well. Now we have to work. We are close, but it is still not the level that I want. We have to serve better, we have to pass the ball better and we have to keep working hard until we do. I don't have some of my experienced players with me during this tournament and I don't know if and when they'll come back. It is a great opportunity to test the younger ones. And even the older ones themselves hope the new ones will be better than them.”

“I am very happy with the result,” said Poland’s head coach Andrea Anastasi. “Now we have the doors to the Final Six open and we are back to where we started the World League. We have many things to improve and keep fighting. I don't know what is going to happen, we have incredibly difficult matches in Bulgaria coming.”
