Serbia's coach: 'It was a tough and interesting match.'

Mauro Beruto, Head Coach of Italy in the Mix zone in Novi Sad

Novi Sad, Serbia, July 5, 2013 – Serbia lost to Italy on Saturday 2-3 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 17-19), diminishing all chances to qualify for the FIVB World League finals.

“It was a tough and interesting match,” said Serbia’s head coach Igor Kolakovic. “We were so close to victory, I think maybe we deserved it, but one ball decided.”

“We saw a very high level of volleyball in this match,” said Italy’s head coach Mauro Berruto. “It was very emotional. We did not start well, but we were improving during the match. This is one important step for qualifying to the Final Tournament.”

The loss means Serbia is officially out of the World League finals.

“Psychologically we entered the match better than last week,” said Serbia’s team captain Dragan Stankovic. “We were leading 2-1 in sets and we should have closed the match, but we were a bit unfortunate. We want to win tomorrow, even though we lost our chances for the Final Tournament.”

“We started nervously,” said Italy’s blocker Emanuele Birarelli. “We were playing a lot over the years against each other, and I do not know why we fell under the pressure at the beginning. However, we regained the momentum during the game and we won this very important match.”
