Hoag says Japan made it a battle after slow start

John Gordon Perrin of Canada spikes against the Japanese block

Osaka, Japan, July 6, 2013 - Canada coach Glenn Hoag says his side's blocking was the key to victory in the official Japan v Canada press conference.

Canada coach Glenn Hoag: We started fairly well. Japan struggled in the beginning. They adjusted well and it was a real battle until the end. We blocked well throughout the match, but did make some mistakes in the third set.

Japan coach Gary Sato: I'm disappointed we came up short. The Canadian team played well and we didn't play up to our potential. They played inspired volleyball and put a lot of pressure on us from the service line and blocked well.

Canada captain Frederic Winters: It was an up and down match. We gave them momentum in the third set. We knew they would fight hard. We played well and didn't panic at the end of the sets.

Canada player John Gordon Perrin: We played well in the first two sets, but we knew they were going to play better. We are happy with the win and looking forward to tomorrow.

Japan captain Kota Yamamura: We started very badly. In the past we may have lost a match like this 3-0. We did well in the third set and this will help our growth. Canada studied us very well. Our play became predictable there for a while. We persisted and played better.

Japan player Tatsuya Fukuzawa: We could not cope with their height. We fell into their pace and they gained many block points. We came back in the third set, but made some mistakes in the fourth and they took the momentum back.
