Russia, Iran and Poland lead day of big comebacks

Iran celebrate their five-set win over Cuba on Friday

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 5, 2013 – Russia, Iran and Poland won tough, five-set matches on Friday as the FIVB World League entered its sixth week. The Netherlands and Brazil also won on Friday after both dropped the first set.

In their first World League meeting, Russia had to fight back from 0-2 and the loss of Alexey Spiridonov to a red card to overcome Germany 3-2 (21-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16,15-7) in Frankfurt. Nikolay Pavlov was key for Russia, picking up 29 points.

In Katowice, hosts Poland had to overcome a mid-match lapse before narrowly getting the better of USA 25-22, 19-25, 13-25, 30-28, 18-16. Jakub Jarosz of Poland was named the MVP of the match and was the best scorer for his team with 21 points. Carson Clark of the USA topped all scorers with 24 points. The Americans failed to convert three match points in the fourth set. “It was a great match for both teams,” said USA captain Matthew Anderson. “We played very well as a team. Unfortunately, they came out on top.”

In Havana, Iran also had to come back from two sets down before overcoming Cuba in five sets: 24-26, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 16-14. Iran got strong performances from Ghafour Amir (17 points), Mohammed Mousavi (16, including five blocks) and Alireza Mobasheri (15). Cuba were led by Rolando Cepeda with 24 points and Yordan Bisset with 22. Crucially, Iran outblocked Cuba 14-8. Argentinean Julio Velasco, coach of Iran, was very pleased with his players’ dramatic comeback: “It was a tough game, as we expected. I think this match was a huge experience for both teams.“

In Brasilia, Brazil came back from a set behind to beat Bulgaria 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23). Leandro Vissotto was the match’s top scorer with 19 points while Todor Aleksiev was top scorer for Bulgaria with 15 points. The Bulgarians were hurt by 34 errors, 12 more than Brazil. The victory put Brazil at the top of Pool A with 16 points. Bulgaria are second on 14 points.

In Friday’s other match, the Netherlands also dropped the first set before edging Finland 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23) in Tampere. The win edged the Dutch closer to qualifying for the Finals. They lead Canada by five points, with the Canadians facing Japan on Saturday.

World League action continues with eight matches on Saturday.

This week’s FIVB Volleyball World League Match of the Week will also take place on Saturday when Serbia take on Italy in Novi Sad (18:00 GMT). The match will be live-streamed free on FIVB Web TV.
