Stats show tough battles ahead in fifth week of World League

Brazil on the court at the 2013 FIVB World League

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 28, 2013 - Brazil and Bulgaria will try to maintain their unbeaten record, the defending champion, Poland, will try to recover from their string of defeats and Iran will try to get the second win of their inaugural season in the fifth weekend of the 2013 FIVB World League.

Brazil and France kick off week five of the World League, where undefeated Brazil faces off against France, which has won five of its last seven games. Brazil can win their fourth win in straight sets in a row against France. Brazil managed to win four straight against a specific opponent in 2011, when they beat Puerto Rico. The tight match will see the leading defensive player in the 2013 World League, Mario da Silva Junior Pedreira Brazil (3.20) and France’s Jenia Grebennikov (2,35).

Poland is still trying to recover from their poor start to the 2013 World League, becoming the first defending champions to start their next World League campaign with four successive defeats. The No. 4 in the world plays against Argentina, which have lost five of their first six games so far. Poland is unbeaten in their last 16 World League matches against Argentina. The last time they could not beat the world No. 9 was almost 11 years ago. On June 7, 2002 Argentina won 3-0 in San Juan.

The United States, led by the top receiver Matthew Anderson who has an efficiency rate of 83.17 percent, could tie for seventh most successful country in the World League if they win both games against Bulgaria, and if Poland lost both games against Argentina. The 2008 Olympic champions have won 116 World League matches to date. U.S. and Bulgaria have met nine times in the World League. The United States has won the last meeting between them, and may be straight wins against Bulgaria for the first time in its history the World League.

Last week, undefeated Italy came to an end after five games, when Russia was stronger in Surgut and eight times World League champions lost 3-2. This week, Italy will face Iran for the first time in the World League. But the party cannot be safe for Italy. Last week, Iran became the first team to win a game in his debut season in the World League from the Czech Republic in 2003. Iran said its first World League win at home to Serbia: 3-2.

Cuba and Russia will play each other the biggest game played in the World League. Russia has won 22 of its last 29 World League matches against Cuba. After starting six games at home, Russia will face their first two cards. Cuba has won three of the last four. Cuba has lost its first six games of the World League for the first time in his 23 appearances.

Serbia plays against Germany for the first time in the World League as an independent country. If Serbia lost twice against Germany, will have a negative balance after eight games (three wins, five losses). This happened only in 2008 (also three wins in eight).

Finland can beat its record of the 2012 FIVB World League, taking their fourth win of the World League campaign this year when he faces Canada who can score a 3-0 winning streak for the first time ever World League. Finland and Canada have met eight times, with Finland winning five times.

The Netherlands will face Korea, which began its campaign of World League 2013 on a high note. For the second time in history, and for the first time since 1993, Korea won their first two games (both 3-1 to Japan). They lost the next four. Korea and the Netherlands have met 16 times in the World League. The Dutch have lost just once in their first meeting ever in 1993.

Japan, who have suffered more defeats than all the teams in the World League history: 191, try to get a win against Portugal, which has won three of his six World League matches in 2013. Portugal and Japan have met on four occasions, in 2001 and 2005 Intercontinental Round. Of these eight games, Japan and Portugal took five three.
