Lausanne, Switzerland, July 4, 2013 – As we roll into the sixth weekend of the World League Bulgaria will be working hard to keep its place at the head of Pool A ahead of Brazil. Defending champions Poland will be looking to keep up its winning streak in its match against USA after winning its two matches against Argentina last week. And Portugal will be looking to hold onto its third place in Pool C to avoid playing in the 2014 World League play offs.
Brazil and Bulgaria kick off the Pool A matches with Bulgaria the surprise leader in the pool after six matches, with five wins and 14 points. Brazil and Bulgaria are the only countries left in the 2013 World League who have lost only one match so far in the tournament. With Brazil’s Mario da Silva Pedreira Junior as best digger in the 2013 World League so far with a 2.88 average by set, Brazil will be looking to reach its 300th victory in the World League this weekend.
In a rematch of the 2012 World League final, Poland and USA will face each other in the second Pool A match of the weekend. Both have seen a snap in their four-match losing streak after Poland got back on track with two victories over Argentina last weekend and the USA won against Bulgaria.
Having won just one of its first eight matches in the 2013 World League, Argentina will face France who is currently in a respectable fourth position in Pool A. France’s Jenia Grebennikov has the most total disg in teh competition with 84 and is third best in average by set at 2.4.
As Russia and Germany get set to meet each other, Russia goes into the weekend having won sic or its eight matches in the 2013 World league. Germany has won half of its six matches in this year’s World League to sit in fourth place in Pool B.
Serbia currently sites in third place in Pool B with a 4-4 record from its first eight matches. Its opponent this weekend leads Pool B with 17 points, which in the entire 2013 World League trails only Pool C powers The Netherlands (19) and Canada (18).
Iran and Cuba will meet for the first time on a World League level this weekend. Iran have won twice in their debut season in the World League while Cuba have the worst World League set ratio in this year’s World League -0.273 (6 to 22) and a seven match losing streak.
It will be Finland and The Netherlands’ first World League meeting in 20 years in their pool C match this weekend with the Netherlands currently leading all countries in the 2013 World League with 19 points in its eight matches. Finland sites in fourth place in Pool C.
This will also be the first time that Japan and Canada will meet each other on the World League level. Japan have won three of their last four matches while Canada are enjoying their best ever world League campaign with six wins in their first eight matches.
