Brazil and Bulgaria ready to clash for the leadership of Pool A

Brazil is hoping that their home match and support of the local fans will give them the edge they need to beat Bulgaria for the top spot in Pool A this weekend.

Brasilia, Brazil, July 4, 2013 – Brazil and Bulgaria will meet on Friday and Saturday, in Brasilia’s Nilson Nelson gymnasium, to play for the top spot in Pool A.

The two teams have a similar record in the competition with five wins and one loss, although Bulgaria is currently one point ahead of Brazil. The team with the best performance in Brasilia will book its ticket to the Finals that will be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina from July 17 to 21.

Brazil has one advantage this weekend and that is the support of local fans. The Brazilian team has already experienced the support of 150 children from a local sports development programme during one of its training sessions. “In Brasilia, we always have a huge, intense support from the fans. I hope they can give us the extra energy we need to secure our spot in the Finals,” said Brazil’s coach Bernardinho.

“It is a tough week. Bulgaria has a tall team and they feel very confident. They also have Sokolov - one of the best hitters in the world. So, we have to play really well to win these matches,” Bernardinho added.

Following their Brazil’s defeat against France last week, Brazilian setter Bruno said, “We’ve been training really hard and we can’t erase all that we’ve been done because of this defeat. We’ll play at home, supported by thousands of fans. We have to be play aggressively, as we always do.”

According the middle-blocker Lucão, Bulgaria has a strong team, but he feels the Brazilian team is ready to face this challenge. “Bulgaria always had a strong attack and great blockers. Their serve might be difficult for our pass. We have to serve well to impact their attack power.”
