Old friends in a decisive clash

Novi Sad, Serbia, July 3, 2013 – Serbia is preparing to meet Italy on home ground in this weekend’s World League Intercontinental Round matches.

Serbia and Italy have met on 22 occasions in the World League (16 in the Intercontinental round), with Serbia winning 12 times and Italy 10, with the set difference of 50:44 in Serbia`s favour. In the Intercontinental round, Serbia has won 10 matches, with six losses. At the Final Tournament, Italy has won four matches and Serbia two.

This weekend’s Pool B matches will be a decisive one for the final standings as Serbia will need two victories against Italy if it is to reach the Final Tournament.

“We are glad that we are still in the running for the Final Tournament. We are hopeful, although it will be very difficult to beat Italy twice. Of course, where we have the slightest chance - we will try to use it. We expect support from our fans in Vojvodina Hall of Sports,” said Igor Kolakovi?, Serbia’s coach.

The last time Serbia and Italy met each other was in the 2010 Intercontinental Round, where both teams had two wins and two losses, and three of those matches finished with a score of 3-2.

In Hotel “Park” in Novi Sad the press conference was held before the start of the 2013 World League Pool B matches between old rivals Serbia and Italy. The conference was attended by Mr. Igor Kolakovic, Mr. Dragan Stankovic, Mr. Mauro Berutto, and Mr. Cristian Savani, who spoke about their feelings and expectations from the upcoming matches.


Igor Kolakovic, head coach of Serbia: “I am glad we play in Novi Sad such an important matches, because here the fans are great and we always perform well. We know that Italy is better than us in this moment, but we must not fell under the pressure. It is a great challenge for us to play against such a strong team. We know them well, a lot of our players play in Serie A, so we have to be calm and patient and try to do our best. Whatever happens, this will be a valuable experience for us”.


Mauro Berutto, head coach of Italy: “This weekend is decisive, no doubt about that. It is true, we know each other very well, a lot of our players are playing in the same clubs. These are very important matches and everything is clear. We will fight until the very end. I am also happy that we are playing in Novi Sad, the city well known for its passion for volleyball”.


Dragan Stankovic, team captain of Serbia: “Our matches were always interesting until the last point. We know what we have to do, and if are capable of doing it, Novi Sad is the right place. We will do our best to win both matches. I hope we will be focused and patient enough to make it happen”.


Cristian Savani, team captain of Italy: “It will be a very tough weekend, two very difficult matches. We prepared well because we know that these matches are decisive and we will try to stay focused and do what we have to do in order to qualify to the Final Tournament”.


The Serbia – Italy matches are scheduled for July 6-7 from 20:00 CET in “Vojvodina” Hall of Sports in the City of Novi Sad.
