“We have the chance to reach the final round” – Vital Heynan

If Germany manages to secure two victories against Olympic champions Russia this weekend, it could finally realise its dream of a second World League Final participation.

Frankfurt, Germany, July 3, 2013 - Heading into week 6 of the World League Intercontinental Round, Germany’s coach Vital Heynen has much to be positive about.  “We have to look upwards, because there is a chance to reach the final round,” said Heynen who also commended his team on establishing itself so fast at the World League this year.

The German team has collected points against each of its opponents (one point from its match against Italy, six points against Cuba and four against Serbia). In this weekend’s matches Germany will take on Olympic Champion Russia on July 5 and 6 at the Frankfurt Main Fraport Arena.

Heynen expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance against Serbia saying, “We have played impressively in Serbia and can keep pace against each team with this performance. After the unexpected points in Serbia we have the chance to make it to the final round in Argentina.” The German team still has five points less than Russia, but they have played two more games than Team Germany.

Having lost their second game to Cuba 1-3, Russia must now deal with the pressure of having to win against Germany to advance to the final round. Heynen meanwhile is waiting for details of the Russian squad with bated breath as in previous rounds, Russian superstars Maxim Mikhaylov and Dimitriy Muserskiy, have not featured in the team line-up.

Heynen and his team should know what to expect by Thursday when Russian coach Andrey Voronkov will announce his 12 man squad. Heynen has called on fans saying, “We need the support of everybody, to create an absolute miracle. If we achieve the final tournament with this team, this is a much bigger surprise than the fifth place in London.”
