Final showdown for Argentina and France in Salta

Salta Sport Secretary Federico Abud welcomes the French team to Argentina

Salta, Argentina, July 3, 2013 – Argentina is preparing for a weekend of action as the northern city of Salta gets ready to host France in the last weekend of the FIVB World League Intercontinental Round. While the local side has already qualified for the finals, the Europeans are in urgent need of points if they are to keep their dream alive.

Argentina is hoping to overturn its two match loss against defending World League champions, Poland last weekend. The home team will have a few training sessions at the CeNARD headquarters in Buenos Aires before travelling to Salta on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, the France team will arrive at the venue on Tuesday afternoon hot on the heels of ending Brazil’s winning streak in Sao Paulo. Head coach Laurent Tillie will rely on the same 12 players that shocked the world’s number 1 team in front of their home crowd.

France is currently ranked fourth in Pool A, four points behind group-leaders Bulgaria and is also surpassed by Brazil and USA in the rankings. The French must defeat Argentina in both matches in order to have a good chance of earning a place in the Finals.

As for the venue, Estadio Delmi has only hosted an FIVB World League match once before in the 1990s. It was also one of the venues for the 2002 World Championship held in Argentina. Salta fans are already anxious to have a world-class volleyball event after more than a decade.
