Cuba pick up first win; Brazil handed first loss in World League

France celebrate their victory against Brazil on Saturday

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 29, 2013 – Cuba played its best match of FIVB World League 2013 and defeated Russia 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday, breaking a seven-game losing streak in the tournament.

Cuba coach Orlando Samuels praised his young players: “It was step by step. First, we couldn’t even win a set; tonight they loosened up and played hard. It was definitely our best game.” It was Cuba’s first win at their eighth attempt in this year’s World League.

Earlier, France handed Brazil a surprising first loss in Sao Paulo, getting big games from Earvin Ngapeth (26 points) and Mory Sidibe (18 points) as they won 3-1 (29-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19). “It was a fantastic experience here,” said France coach Laurent Tillie. “It is the first time that we won on Brazilian soil. We have a young team that is learning a lot.”

Meanwhile, Bulgaria returned to form after their first loss on Friday, defeating USA in four sets (25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21) in Reno. Tsvetan Sokolov led the way for Bulgaria with 21 points.

In other matches on Saturday, the Netherlands defeated Korea 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16) in Cheonan, Korea; Canada swept Finland in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-17) in Tampere, Finland; Germany overcame Serbia 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21) in Belgrade; and Portugal beat Japan 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-15) in Guimaraes.

World League action continues with five matches on Sunday.
