Brazil plays first home match of 2013 World League

Lucarelli will play for the first time in home with the Brazilian t-shirt

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 26, 2013 – After a good start in the 2013 FIVB Volleyball World League,  going undefeated in the first four games, Brazil will play its first match at home in São Paulo’s Ibirapuera gymnasium.

The nine-time champions will compete against France on Friday and Saturday. The meet will also be a special moment for five Brazilian players; The wing spikers Lucarelli and Lipe, the middle blocker Mauricio, the setter William and the opposite spiker Renan will play for the first time with the Brazilian shirt in Brazil.

Wing spiker Lucarelli lives the expectation to play with the green and yellow shirt in front of his friends, family, and Brazilians fans.

“My first experience with main national team happened in a friendly game against Japan in 2011,” Lucarelli said. “However, FIVB World League is different. This will be my first time with the main national team at home in an official competition. I think is really good to play in front of our home crowd. I see this in a positive way. We have to use the cheering for our side.”

Setter William hopes to have the cheers of an enthusiastic home crowd during the games against France.

“I am really happy,” William said. “I am from São Paulo and never played in Ibirapuera. I watched the FIVB World Club Championship in 1988 here and I dreamed to play in this gymnasium. For sure my heart will be beating strong. To play in home with the team in a good moment and fighting for qualification for the final round is really exciting.”

According the Brazilian head coach Bernardinho, the fact to play in home leaves some worries.

“Two questions are involved when we play in Brazil,” Bernardinho said. “There is some natural jitter because we are at the side of our fans and families. All of this creates some kind of anxiety. Other point is to take care to not lose the focus with the requests of family, press and some professional questions. The focus has to be the game.”

On the other side, France will fight for their third victory in this edition of the tournament. Last weekend, France beat Poland two times in exciting matches at home that ended 3-2.
