Germany's coach: "Today we were on the lucky side"

German captain Jochen Schöps made some important points in the game versus Cuba including the match point.

Bremen, Germany, June 23, 2013 – After a defeat Saturday, Germany came back to win 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23) against Cuba.

“Cuba played a really good game,” said Germany’s coach Vital Heynen. “They were pushing us really hard, and for a long time we were not seeing the way to win the game. Today we were on the lucky side.”

“We expected the tough game,” said Germany’s captain Jochen Schöps. “We needed a little time to get accustomed to the ‘new’ Cuban team. They played much better in attack, and we had a lot of problems, but at the end we won the game because of some series.”

Germany’s head coach Vital Heynen changed his team on four positions from Saturday, putting Patrick Steuerwald, Chirstian Fromm, Tim Broshog and Dirk Westphal in the starting six. But the Cubans also learned from their previous defeat, as Rolando Cepeda scored seven points and ensured a balanced result in the first set. In the end, the German’s reception was the key to their success.

“We were not able to play constantly the whole set,” said Cuba’s coach Orlando Samuels. “I think we had the chance to win the fourth set, but after the 22nd point we stop playing. It was a disaster yesterday, but today we showed a good performance. Zero points after three game play weekends wasn´t our aim, but we have to increase our performance every week and every game now.”

“It’s bad that we can´t win the second set,” said Cuba’s captain Lian Sem Estrada Joa. “Normally we have to win it with a four point advantage. But I produced too many errors in the end. However, I think we played better compared to yesterday. I hope that we can win our games next week in Havanna.”
