Iran's coach: The win is a glory for us

Iran discusses its first World League win Sunday

Tehran, Iran, June 23, 2013 – Iran put on a show for its fans on Sunday, securing their first victory in their second FIVB World League home encounter against Serbia 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 23-25,25-22,15-12).

“We are so happy that we won the match,” said Iran’s head coach Julio Velasco. “We took the game from a very good European team, and it is a glory for us.” Velasco said that in the pre-game meeting he asked players what they had learned from first match, to help secure Sunday’s win.

“We gave two sets in this match but we learned a lot from Serbia especially in defense and dig,” Velasco said. “The most important matter for us was fighting spirit of the team, we fought till last point. For me, ensuring the players are learning is very important. It is more important than the words of head coach. As Capitan Marouf said, ‘the fighting spirit of players was high.”

Serbia fell short in skills such as service, blocks, digs and sets against Iran, leading to their defeat.

“It was a tough match,” said Serbia’s head coach Igor Kolakovic. “We give congratulations to Iran team. They deserved this win. They believed much more than us for win. Our chance in set forth was high, but we did not take it.”

“It was a good match, but we had a hard time by coming back from previous matches,” said Serbia’s captain Dragan Stankovic. “We played well in first match, but today we played bad in two sets. The aim of any team is win in each game.”

“Iran is playing in World League for the first time,” Stankovic continued. “We were expecting to have this number of spectators in the hall both team played well.”

Loyal fans packed Tehran at Azadi hall to watch the Pool B match while others tuned into sports radio and TV, which has helped awaken national sense and enthusiast Iran’s volleyball team, creating support for the team’s ability to defeat their rivals.

“Our win [Sunday] proved that we were good and we were deserved to win the first match also,” said Iran’s captain Saeed Marouf. “The fans helped us a lot. In third set we lost our control. Playing with good team allowed us to get experience from them. It is the first time we are playing in the World League, so each play by play we expect to play better.“
