Germany finds win at World League, Russia recovers from loss

Net duel between Germany´s Marcus Böhme and Cuba´s Lian Sem Estrada

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 22, 2013 – Germany gained its first victory of the 2013 FIVB World League season, Russia recovered from Friday’s loss, Bulgaria secured another win and the Netherlands beat Portugal in overtime during World League matches on Saturday.

Saturday’s exciting matches began with a dramatic five-set match in Surgut, where Russia beat Italy 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 26-28, 23-25, 15-12). Italy had rediscovered their rhythm after Friday’s 1-3 loss, and their well-balanced offence gave them a narrow two-point advantage early on. Russia leveled at 12-12, but with the help of Travica Dragan’s powerful services the visiting team took the set 23-25 to force a decider. The result closes the gap at the top of pool B. Italy are still top with 15 points, Russia remain second, just one behind on 14.

Bulgaria concluded their visit to Argentina for the 2013 World League with a 3-0 win, (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) at home. Saturday’s game started fast and furious for Bulgaria at 7-1. Bulgaria’s powerful attack and serve and smooth working block left no chance for Argentina to react.  Bulgaria and Argentina play again Sunday in Bulgaria.

Team Germany gained its first victory in the 2013 FIVB World League with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) win against World Champion runner-up, Cuba on Saturday. After two defeats during the opening weekend of the World League in Italy (0-3, 2-3), Germany’s win now puts them near Serbia, their opponent next week. The Cuban team is still struggling to find a win, after losing their first five games. Germany and Cuba meet again Sunday at Bremen Area for the last match of week four’s World League. Germany attacked strongly through the middle leaving the Cuban team no chance. Marcus Böhme

The Netherlands and Portugal also faced off in an exciting five-set match on Saturday, where the visiting team won 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 28-16). On Saturday, the opening set in Apeldoorn again showed equivalency of the two teams. With the skill of  team captain Rauwerdink, the home team managed to create a gap of three points (9-6). Portugal kept cool and levelled the score again at 10-10, taking over the lead after a kill block of Alex and Marcel Keller Gil. The Netherlands levelled again at 13-13, after which Portugal created its first match point which was cashed immediately.  On Sunday, Poland and the Netherlands face off again for their last World League match in Omnisport Apeldoorn at 13:30.
