Flavio Gulinelli: "We won, but not with our best play"

Netherlands head coach Edwin Benne talks to his men during a time out

Apeldoorn, Portugal, June 22, 2013--After a thrilling match in Apeldoorn, both head coaches stated that they were not happy with the level of their teams.

Losing coach Edwin Benne: "Today we did not play at our best level. I saw too many service mistakes, and our blocking and defense was not what it should be. Last week against Japan, we were more stable, and that is something to evaluate tomorrow morning. Still, of course, my congratulations to Flavio and his team.”

His team captain Rob Bontje, who did not play today, also saw a lesser team than two weeks ago: "We knew this would be a tough match, but me and my teammates are disappointed. The main cause is not the result, but the fact we did not play at our best level.”

Benne’s Portuguese colleague Flavio Gulinelli agreed: "The Dutch were not at their best today, but neither were we. We made too many unforced errors on both sides. We won, but I am not satisfied with the play of my team. The qualification matches last year were on a better level.”

Gulinelli’s team captain Jose Joao was happy with the result: "I agree with my coach that we can do better. It was a long, intense match, perhaps that was too much for us.”
