Finland captain Siltala: Japan played really wisely, hit really hard

Finnish captain Antti Siltala and his team fought hard, but came up short vs Japan

Komaki, Japan, June 16, 2013 – After two tough four-set matches against Finland in Komaki, coach Gary Sato and his Japan team were delighted to emerge with a pair of 3-1 wins. Finland coach Tuomas Sammelvuo and his captain Antti Siltala were quick to credit the Japan team, but were disappointed that they fell victim to the same problems that plagued them in Saturday’s match.

Finland coach Tuomas Sammelvuo: At least we started better, playing not so bad. Japan made mistakes early, but then the game became like yesterday – high balls were going through our hands. Japan played really wisely, hit really hard. This is the kind of game we should play also. They played a great game on defense too.

Finland captain Antti Siltala: (on how Sunday’s match differed from Saturday’s) There is not such a big difference; we had the same kind of problems – big problems with the high ball, big problems with our counter attack. Like yesterday, when Japan was spiking high balls, we had big problems blocking.

Japan coach Gary Sato: I’m beginning to like Nagoya more and more. It was fun and the team played very well. It was a very hard-fought match. The Finnish team played with more intention in this second game. They were a lot hungrier. But I’m proud that our team met that challenge, with lots of intention and desire as well.

(On Yako and Ishijima): Both made great contributions. I was very pleased with how we could utilize both of them. And they responded very well.

Japan captain Kota Yamamura: After losing the first set we could tell that Finland had studied our play a lot. But after the second, we played competitively again, and I was sure we were starting to come together.

(On communicating with assistant coach David Hunt): At first we didn’t quite understand what we was saying, but we had an interpreter prepare a list of common expressions, and using that we came to understand his directions better. That’s really working now.

Japan player Yusuke Ishijima: These two victories in Komaki were great for us. I hope we can continue to improve moving forward.

Japan player Yu Koshikawa: I’m happy with these two wins, and I was pretty upset about the previous four games. But I’m satisfied today. We are still on our way towards improvement.
