Portugal beat Canada 3-1 for second win in World League

Marco Ferreira of Portugal slams the ball past the Canadian block on Saturday

Mississauga, Canada, June 8, 2013 – Canada and Portugal met for the second night in FIVB World League Pool C action at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on Saturday and Portugal prevailed in four sets: 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23.

Although Canada made quick work of Portugal with a three-set win on Friday, it was a tighter contest on Saturday in front of a crowd that had supporters of both teams on the edge of their seats.

Canada seemed to miss the physical presence of Friday’s leading scorer Gavin Schmitt – out injured – and had a tentative start that allowed Portugal to get the better of them from early on in the first set.

In the second, Portugal wilted midway through the set, allowing Canada to breeze through the second half of the set.

But Canada's momentum did not last into the third, which they dropped by seven points.

The last set was tighter, but too late for Canada to make its mark.

Portugal now has a World League record of two wins and two losses, while Canada's record is the same at 2-2.

Portugal's Alexandre Ferreira had 17 points and the team's captain Joao Jose finished with 16.

Gord Perrin was Canada's top scorer with 13.

Last week, Canada had one win and one loss against the Dutch team. Next week, again at the Hershey Centre, Canada faces Korea.
